Should bake sales be illegal?
Bake sales have always been a quick and effective way for schools or clubs to raise money for special events. But, Massachusetts residents should start to think of other ways to fund their field trips. As part of the Department of Public Health’s efforts to address childhood obesity, bake sales were targeted. It is estimated that one third of school age children are overweight or obese. Other communities have limited school bake sales, including some districts in New York, California, Connecticut, and Maryland. Massachusetts efforts are generating significant anger and their representatives are listening. Yesterday, Massachusetts House of Representatives unanimously voted to reverse the bake sale ban. The Senate is scheduled to vote on reversal later today. If the rule is not reversed, it would go into effect in August.
