  • She was the first female dean of Harvard Law School.
  • She was the first female Solicitor General of the United States, the duties of which is to represent the government of United States in cases in front of the Supreme Court.
  • Nominated to Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on May 9, 2010 by President Barack Obama to fill the seat of retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.
  • Confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 63-37.  Took the oath on August 7, 2010.
