Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch

Associate Justice Gorsuch was born in Colorado on August 29, 1967. He attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He clerked for Associate Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy from 1993 to 1994. After several years in private practice, Gorsuch worked in the Justice Department under Attorney general Alberto Gonzales.  In 2006, President George W. Bush nominated Gorsuch to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. After the unexpected passing of Associate Justice Antonin Scalia on February 13, 2106, the Republican controlled Senate refused to consider the nomination of President Obama’s nomination to fill this vacancy, Judge Merrick Garland. After Donald Trump won the Presidential Election, he quickly nominated Neil Gorsuch. Due to the perceived mistreatment of Judge Garland, Democrats filibustered Gorsuch’s confirmation. Republican’s invoked the “nuclear option” by changing the Senate rules and preventing the filibuster of Supreme Court nominees.  Neil Gorsuch went on to be confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 54-45. He was sworn in on April 10, 2017.
