Texting While Walking: A New Danger?

New fines are being issued for texting while walking.

While the dangers of texting while driving have been well publicized over the last few years, one city in New Jersey appears to be taking the ban one step further.  In Fort Lee, New Jersey, police will begin issuing $85 jaywalking tickets to pedestrians who text while walking.  They are reacting to the fact that their community has suffered three fatal pedestrian-invloved accidents this year.  During a recent grace period, 117 warnings were handed out.  A study a Stony Brook Univeristy in New York found that textures were 60% more likely to veer off course while walking compared to non-texters.   A Ohio State University study found that during 2008, cellphone use while walking accounted for more than 1,000 emergency room visits.  Some people disagree.  They find that the fine is excessive.  Others believe that they look up quite often even while texting.
